Ashley Madison

Hopefully it isn't in bad taste, making reference to another dating website on FF. If so, Oods, please feel free to remove this post.

For those who don't know, Ashley Madison is a dating website that is targeted at married couples seeking partners with whom to have 'extra-marital relations'. The tag line for the site is, "Life is short. Have an affair." It is a for-profit privately run company.

As you might imagine, this has been a controversial concept amongst the general public. AM has been ostracized based on the moral judgements of a range of media.

So, I'm looking for opinions here. Is Ashley Madison fundamentally immoral?

I will supply my personal views, tentitively, hopefully not as fuel for abuse.

In my eyes, the business concept for Ashley Madison is entirely justified by the success of the business itself (AM now claims to have over 1 million members). The fact that there is a clear market for this validates the existence of a service for this market. By this reasoning, the moral issues surrounding the idea of cheating should be levelled at the consumer, not the company.

Please note: this is NOT a debate on the 'rightness' or 'wrongness' of cheating, it is regarding whether Ashley Madison has violated social or moral responsibilities by promoting cheating.

Please comment with your views! :)

The sites are there, it is up to the individual wether they cheat or not. So no I don't believe that they have violated any moral responsibilities.
People are going to cheat on the internet or off it. The internet has just made it easier.

Firstly, Pagan is right, people will cheat whether its on the internet or not - people can cheat via myspace and facebook too - any online comunity is an avenue for "meeting" people.
Secondly, a million members? I wonder how many of those are legit?
This site could have millions of members too, if the owner didn't give a shit about the service he provides, and only cared about his back pocket.

What the differance to someone using Ashley Madison or going to a brothel. They can both be used by married and single people. At the end of the day its the internal morality of the person and there values and not that of the community that matters.
So I believe they have not violated any community values or responsibilties.

I agree, waney. I guess the difference is, though, that AM is actually targeted at married people. Unlike a brothel.

Personnaly I am VERY against affairs (if you read our profile you will see that it's not what we are looking for, although is my wife playing with another woman an affair?) Even with my strong views re cheatingI don't think any service provider is morally responsible for the actions of their customers unless they are actively deceiving the general public in some way shapeor manner. This is not what is happening with AM, they are providing a service, it is up to the public to decide whether or not to use it.
Personnaly I think if somebody doesn't like what others get up to on sites like this then go home, put neighbors or whatever junk they watch on and leave people the hell alone to do with their lives what they choose (if somebody decides to deceive their spouses by having an affair I may not like it but it's not my place to judge or interfere, that in itself is more likely to be immoral)
