when your child comes home broken....

All of our children leave the nest, are meant to grow and become the adults we always knew they would become.

Sometimes it goes wrong, they meet the wrong crowd, fall in with the wrong kinds of drugs, try to be all grown up.

I always said that I would never have a child addicted to drugs or alcohol, this is me saying I was never so wrong.

When your child comes home broken and half their body weight and screaming for help, and your shocked out of your mind, who do you turn too?

Family doesn't cut it, you want to keep it quiet for his/her sake, and yes, maybe a deep feeling that maybe you failed as a parent.

I mean it is so easy for them to come home and expect Mum to fix it, but what if she doesn't know how?

Fuck !
As a parent of 2 teenaged girls i can only begin to imagine what you're going through, Miss Pagan :(
I've had to pick both my girls up from the hospital due to being too pissed - its a heartbreaking experience, not to mention frustrating, because as you said, you cant help but feel somewhat responsible. But at the end of the day, they are their own people, and you cant make every choice for them - they will inevitably make some poor choices in life - it's our job as parents to be for them when they stumble.
I really have no advice for you, other than to say don't blame yourself. She came home to you for help right? that means she loves you, and respects you as a parent. She needs love and comfort - talk to her, always....and always listen. Absorb everything she tells you and just give her your opinion - without getting cranky at her....tough to do i know, but i believe support will be the best path.
Best wishes to you all.

well I don't know if you can see this but I will give it a go!!! I feel very much for you Pagan and the trouble you are having with your daughter. It is one of the many nightmares a parent and child can go through. It is great that your daughter felt she could come to you in her crisis and felt that you would be there for her. It is right you must be a fantastic mother!!!

I agree with a lot of things everyone has said and all I the only thing I can add is just let her know that no matter what, you are there for her and then hopefully the problem will be halved as they say.... a problem shared is a problem halved. The other thing I will add is make sure you keep the lines of communication open no matter what.

I have a girlfriend whose adult daughter quite often talks to me because her mother often looses it with her and can't see her point of view!!! Just try and love that is all we can do and hope that our morals and lessons have instilled in then have worked and they use them.

it probably wasnt easy for her/him to come home and ask for help but your child knew you would be the only person that would still love her/him now matter how screwed up life was. you have done a great job keep going x x
